Great hikes. Depending on your route, it can be challenging but great for experienced hikers. There are several trails to choose. Easier ones for the kiddos. The little mining outpost itself is very cool with lots to see. They are doing restorations to some of the buildings and take serious pride in this area. STAY on trails, the tundra has taken a beating from people with no respect. We were not able to do the full loop, only made it to the the top of the first lake and had wind blowing @ 65+. Made for a great experience. Panning for gold is allowed only with a pan and shovel starting down in Hatcher Pass up to the mining area.

I highly recommend stopping here. It may be a drive but it is beautiful on the way there. Keep in mind it is up hill. You pay for parking and optional tour. But they do offer a yearly pass. This place is so peaceful and rich w history. There's plenty of parking and they have bathrooms here. Picnic tables can be found in the lot for food.
    Things to mind:
Weather. Water. Your shoes. And bring your bear spray. Yes you tourist. Be safe not sorry. The mountains are their homes. Please be respectful here! There are signs w warnings for a reason.

Cold and raining! Still worth seeing and the drive is beautiful. We have a 21 foot TT and an f150. No trouble getting in and out. There were also bigger rigs up there. The tour at $12 was fine. It gets you into locked portions that are interesting. But, for $5 parking fee you can do a self guided tour that gets most of it.

It’s an interesting place and most important a great location. Very good drive and hike around.

The site tells the story of a mining place that grew like anything, created boomtown and then the closure due to WWII. Good details around but lots of damaged buildings and ruins as well, which could be restored at the least for demonstration.

Great spot to visit high in the mountains, long views. The road is paved and in good condition all the way up to the Visitor Center. The mine is adjacent to the center. Good signage throughout the mine area. Still lots of snow on 12 June 22. The visitor center doesn't open until 19 Jun so a 1 mile walk up the hill from the lower parking lot.

Independence Mine State Historical Park Visitor Center - AFAR

While Independence Mine State Historical Park is officially open only during the summer months, Alaskans know that the best time to check out the former mine buildings is after there's plenty of snow on the ground. It's a golden (pun intended) opportunity well worth exploring. Thanks to snowshoes or cross-country skis, the entire mine area becomes a giant playground.
