In 2011, our son was evaluated under ChildFind by his district home school and was found to have issues in the area of expressive speech and language, confirming what we had already suspected. This testing also revealed that he was eligible for speech services, which the school provided after his disability was categorized as a “severe preschool delay.”

What we did not know was that his serve speech delay would later be diagnosed as an unusual case of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), which requires frequent, intense one-on-one speech therapy services. Although the school district should have known this at the time, they only provided our son with their typical cookie cutter, one size fits all speech program.

After one year under the school district’s fraudulent IEP, our son was not making any real positive and measurable progress. We asked the school district to do more and reevaluate the current IEP, but they refused and said I had no right under the law to ask for different and more services, leaving us no choice but to withdraw our son, look for other alternatives, and file multiple lawsuits under IDEA.

It was at this time that we met Lynn Carhaly, a nationally known expert in CAS. She re-tested Liam and the scores confirmed that he had not been making progress with his expressive language during his time with the school district. Even worse, his receptive language scores were now starting to regress below normal. Lynn also confirmed that our son did indeed have one of the worst cases of CAS she had ever seen at the time. As such, Lynn suggested that Liam be put into a program of intensive, one-on-one speech therapy called The Speech-EZ Apraxia Program. This was in line with the latest research on CAS and a complete change from what the school district was willing to provide. In addition, our music therapist Allison Gross with Changed by Music followed Lynn’s treatment plan and program which aided our son’s overall progress.

One year later, Lynn re-tested Liam and the testing clearly showed that his expressive scores had significantly improved and that his receptive scores were no longer regressing. This progress was encouraging and we continued to have Lynn provide services to our son until he tested out.

After several years, Liam’s speech scores were within normal range and he could communicate effectively. This would not have been possible at the school district and we are forever thankful that Lynn’s expertise in the area of CAS provided the opportunity for our son to have a normal educational experience. Today, our son is excelling above grade level in all areas of school and we are forever grateful for our time with Lynn.

My daughter was two and a half when she started at Foundations Developmental House. She had zero words and we were very concerned for her. She started intensive therapy 5 times a week. Shockingly, after just a couple of moths, we could see a huge improvement in her speech. She could now use many sounds that she was unable to use at first. She even started using words we had never thought she would say. The therapists here are amazing. They know exactly where to start and what to work on with each child. I can’t say enough great things about Foundations and we are so blessed and thankful for all of their hard work and dedication.

My son as Apraxia of Speech, and after years of going to different therapists we were blessed to be referred to FDH. After our first week of working with Lynn, we saw such an improvement in my sons speech and confidence. We have been driving up from Yuma for almost two years now, and I could not be happier with the care my son is receiving. Every therapist we have worked with is amazing, and I would definitely recommend FDH to anyone who is looking for a great place to get therapy for their child.

My daughter was severely speech-delayed when we first walked in to FDH. They were able to give us our answer, and diagnosed her with childhood apraxia of speech. They've been treating her ever since, and a year and a half later, she's a different child. Her progress began immediately, so we knew she was finally getting the therapy she needed. All of the therapists are trained under Lynn Carahaly, who created the Speech E-Z Apraxia Program, so treatment is consistent and to Lynn's standards. As the parent, they make sure to keep you involved and informed. With such a diagnosis as apraxia, we feel blessed beyond words to have found FDH.

My son was severely speech delayed- at 3 he had a hand full of words and no sentences. We tried in-home therapy with little progress. After just a few shorts months with FDH my son was thriving, his vocabulary increased and he began speaking in sentences. The speech therapists are awesome at challenging your child while keeping them engaged. Highly recommend!
