Beautiful church, just being inside this church is calming and makes you feel more peaceful somehow.
Worth visiting. The inside of the church is incredible as in the cemetery that surrounds it. Sadly there are children who lived a year or two and one that only lived for only two days. Wonderful prices of California history and the immigrants who made California what it is toady.
The heart of Serbian diaspora in Jackson, California from the Gold Rush days until now.
St Sava Serbian Orthodox Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Named for the Patron Saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church, it was the first Serbian Orthodox church in America. It continues to be the focus for Serbian culture and unity in the Jackson area.
The design incorporates traditional references to small churches in Serbia, brought to the new country in the minds of immigrant Serbian gold miners and their families.
Toward the end of the 19th century, northern California's gold mines drew many Serbians to Amador and Calaveras Counties. Serbians in America established benevolent societies and social organizations to provide services to their communities: assistance to the sick and aged, burials for the dead, celebrations for ethnic and religious holidays, perpetuation of Slavic music and dance and customs.
We love this warm and welcoming Serbian Orthodox Christian community. St. Sava now is home to the relics of St. Sebastian of Jackson and San Francisco, the first American born Orthodox monk and priest now venerated as a Saint, a restless missionary with an amazing life. St. Sebastian please pray for us!
