If you are looking for something to do in LA, then look no further! This location is world-renowned for it's consistent conditions, finely engineered sloped sandy hills, and outstanding safety record. Whether you are just looking for a weekend adventure, or persuing the sport to fly on your own, this is THE place to do it.
BY FAR, the COOLEST THING YOU WILL DO IN LA! Josh and Andy do a great job with the first lesson in hang gliding. Dockweiler Beach is the perfect setting.
I was amazed at how SIMPLE it is to hang glide. Well, to be a beginning hang glider. I'm sure when you start jumping off cliffs to start it's a bit more involved. But to start there's just a couple of simple things to remember and you are flying! You start at the top of a hill and walk towards the ocean downhill. There is no feeling of fear, you are walking into the wind with this huge kite above you and next thing your know you are off the ground. It's about as scary as being on a swing at the park. It felt nearly impossible to really crash and get hurt, the flight isn't that high or long and your instructor is running along side of you.
Yes, they let you go so you're really flying on your own. No,, the glider isn't heavy at all. No, you don't have to worry about flying away if a big gust happens. No, it is not scary when you are in the air. And YES, it's a lot of fun!
An absolutely amazing experience. Andy was an amazing teacher. I went with my brother who had previously been Hang Gliding in Tennessee, and said Hang Gliding on the beach was a much better experience due to the soft ground. You could tell Andy really loved what he was doing, and gave excellent instructions as he ran down the hill with you. We only paid for seven flights, but my brother and I definitely got at least 12 flights with no extra charge. Overall an amazing experience which can compare to no other!
Took my two teenage children here for the 7 flight lesson package while we were in L.A. on vacation. They had a great time and would definitely come back. Andy (the owner), is a great instructor - personable, patient, safety conscious, and overflowing with boundless energy and excitement for the sport. Bonus - There's a great little beach cafe at the other end of the parking lot where you can get breakfast/lunch/snacks..& MUFFINS!!!
Fantastic instructors and a beautiful training site. Windsports instructors are friendly, patient, and safety-oriented -- they are very careful to make sure you are have learned all of the necessary techniques correctly before sending you on to more advanced flying sites. I've heard a number of people observe that you can tell which pilots trained with Windsports, as they are the ones who consistently launch and land without any incidents.
