Kashiwa is a fantastic restaurant with a fantastic omakase.
The food is well worth the money, and is extremely fresh. While the price may turn away some you are paying for quality and a superb range of flavors that other sushi places do not achieve.
The restaurant does get busy later in the day and for good reason, if you want to eat dinner here a reservation is a good idea.
STILL TAKEOUT ONLY as of April, 2022.
This is my favorite place for traditional sushi. The food and experience are excellent. Service starts with hot hand towels, and the miso soup and hot tea are good, but the star is the sushi. The fish was sparkling fresh, and portioned and cut the way I like. Of course it is - because the chef is a fussy old guy whose been doing this for decades.
Advice to diners - If you want rolls with cream cheese and pistachios, then try elsewhere. Ask about the specials - they buy what is best and won't buy the rest. Please keep asking for dine-in service to restart.
Variety of dishes, sushi, and all were tasty, atmosphere peaceful. The service was excellent. It was a little pricy and no prices are posted. But the final bill was about what I thought it would be.
Only been here once and so far so good. Need to try the sushi bar next time.
Very authentic and very good sushi. I sat at the bar and spoke a little Japanese with the two chefs, who seemed to really appreciate my effort, and they were extremely nice.
I ordered the Sashimi Omakase and the Live Shrimp for a total around $77.
The fish was fresh and was textured exactly how I expected the cuts to be.
The Live Shrimp is definitely a unique item I haven't tried before, and is something I recommend to the adventurous eater. You get the bodies (which are freshly slaughtered) on nigiri rolls and the heads are fried completely. I've had sushi places fry fish bones after the dish was completed, before, so this seemed pretty normal. I ate the legs and the backs, but decided to leave the heads since I was sure how I felt about them.
I will definitely be back next time I visit Long Beach for work! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
