Hard to give Nature less than 4 stars but honestly 3.5 stars because the trails do need some maintenance in some areas and better trail markers throughout. Nice elevation changes gives you some exercise so not an easy walk but nothing determination can't easily handle. Not too much shade if any especially mid day so be prepared.

(January 27, 2019, 12:40 pm)The trail head at College and Carlsbad Village Rd is an easy place to park but the first bit of the hike is down steep trail, be ready. The view on the way down is pretty great, with a clear view of the volcano plug all the way south to Sage Creek HS. If you're in it to win it then this trail will connect to the entire calavera trail system and you can go for miles and miles.
