I came for my first time yesterday the 22nd of February 2020. I came with good binoculars and I'm so glad that I did otherwise the experience would not have been as amazing. If you're coming especially with kids I suggest bringing a couple few pairs they're not very expensive. You can drive several circuits around the 16,000 Acres via different access roads what's they call the car tour. There are spots where you can stop and just observe and scan a vast wilderness and the binoculars brought it all into sharp Focus. I saw several Hawk species, countless waterfowl , some not indigenous to California just passing through on migration. Egrets and herons of different models are on display so to speak. There are warblers and wrens and avocets and gulls and Falcons in the form of kestrels. And lastly keep your eyes on the very high altitudes over the reserve as there are many large flocks flying at high altitude heading back to the northern regions. What kind I'm not sure. I believe I saw some cranes and Pelicans yesterday. It's open Dawn until dusk it's free and you can drive your car & never get out or you can walk as far as you would like to There are several "parking lots" throughout. Bring water, there are no drinking fountains but please do not litter. Have fun.

Awesome way to start the morning off bird watching. Park is free and opens at sunrise and closes at sunset.

Great place to go for wildlife if you have patience. It's a large open space, you can slowly drive a good section of it. Plenty of raptors, ducks and other critters. Very entertaining during my quick 40 minute visit.

Excellent nature area for birdwatching or just taking a peaceful stroll through the wetlands.
While the sound of traffic on the nearby freeway is prevalent, you can get further away to where the sound is minimal.

Multiple parking areas provide easy access to different sections of the preserve, complete with a decently maintained Port-O-Pottie at each parking area.
