  Who doesn't love Elk Meadow. Great trails, wonderful views. Bathrooms very clean.

  This trail has a little bit of everything for everyone. Sunny, flat paths along a wide meadow give way to shady forest and more rigorous rocky inclines. Hikers share this trail with bikes, dogs, and trail runners which makes it busy when the weather is fine. Picnic space is limited at the trail head, but benches along the trail provide view locations for lunch and hydration breaks. All in all this is a great place for family or solo hiking.

  Elk Meadow is a very nice trail in the lower foothills of Evergreen. It is a steady incline hike to the peak ok around 9,000ft. From the peak you can see downtown Denver to the continental divide on the Western slope with about a 230 degree area to see. A round is around 8.5 miles (going from parking lot, to peak, and back the other way to the parking lot). It is not a beginner trail, but can be accomplished worth enough time. It took my friend and I (both in our early twenties and in pretty good shape) around 6-6.5 hours to complete the entire trail with some stops for pictures and scenery along the way. The landscape is very pretty as you hike in the treeline up to Alpine level where you will see some Aspen trees. Wildlife seems to be scarce at the lower elevations, but picks up as you go higher with woodpeckers and some smaller rodents. As always, be cautious for snakes and bears. There are quite a bit of mountain bikers in the warmer season, but most of them will pass by respectfully. Make sure to bring enough water and snacks/food to eat as it is a bit long. Also bring a sweater or rain jacket as it rains out of nowhere sometimes. There is a lot of background noise from the highway, but for me it fades away the higher you go, though it is always there throughout the whole trail.
