This is a great place especially if you have disabilities. You can drive around and see just about everything with a good window seat. Many species of birds. I would recommend this over Blackwater if you have to choose!
Perfect Day to enjoy the birds! Snowy Egrets, shorebirds, Marbled Godwits! Dowitchers! Avocets! Savannah Sparrows! Marsh Hawks, Bald Eagles, Great Egrets, Shoveled Ducks, Black Ducks, Green Wing Teal Ducks, Greater & Lesser Yellow Legs, and a Mississipi Kite!
Karen Dever was super helpful at the visitor center. This park has a full drive-through path. You don't need to get on foot to enjoy the birds that frequent these swamps and ponds.
If you're going to be here in the summer - plan to carry a LOT of bug spray and wear long sleeves and pants. The mosquitoes, gnats, flies are incredible in both size an quantity. You will get welts the size of small marbles and bleed from their bites. They can even go through thin cloth - so be warned! If you're not prepared - don't plan on stepping outside your car or opening any windows as you drive through.
That being said - don't forget to grab a pair of free loaner binoculars from the visitor center if you don't have your own.
Its costs $4/car in cash to visit Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge park.
My favorite place for bird photography. Very relaxing to watch birds in their natural habitat
Bombay Hook is one of the best birding areas on the East Coast. The summer is the time to view the resident shore birds. This time of year you should be prepared with your favorite effective insect repellent or plan to view the birds from your car. The refuge has a good driving route so that works. Starting July 1 the Visitors Center is closed on the weekends.
