I think that martial arts schools have 3 main areas of interest they serve: self defense, tradition/art, and sport. Each school will be some combination of those 3. It's important to choose a school based on which of those areas you want to focus on.

RBC is primarily focused on self defense but also with a good slice of sport for those interested in competing. Most of the instruction is based in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but that isn't all there is. The BJJ instruction is excellent - the instructors do a great job of breaking things down into principles and explaining why we should do things a given way and the trade-offs involved. Everyone at the school is friendly and helpful; there's a great spirit of collaboration and brotherhood.

The secret sauce of RBC is the combatives. There is a weekly class that focuses specifically on BJJ application in real-world situations. That includes close quarters training with various weapons like rifles, pistols, and knives. The academy even has a shoot house for working with hallways, entrances, and furniture. This training includes force-on-force because if you don't know if it works under pressure, then you don't know if it works at all.

The school also offers seminars throughout the year on more focused topics like Close Combat Pistol and those are a blast.

I could go on, but basically I highly recommend RBC if you are interested in self-defense or sport BJJ because of the great atmosphere and availability of unique combatives training!

Great school for real BJJ. Combatives program is second to none with a nationally recognized instructor. RBC has a family friendly environment and a huge kids program. Ben and Cindy are very invested in their students well-being and progression.

My son just won his first gold medals in gi and no gi competion after attending here for about 6 months! We had been looking all over Polk county for the right gym and found our home here! I love how they dont just teach jujitsu here, they also teach our children about good character.
