The Apollo Visitor Center is located just inside the park's admission gate. Educational information is offered about sea turtle migration and nesting. You can walk out onto a small boardwalk on the open lagoon. During our visit we got lucky to see two dolphins fishing nearby.
The lagoon side offers trails, docks, kayak points and beautiful views. Some of the trails are shaded with Spanish moss covered trees. These trails are enchanting and easy to walk. We also had the chance to meet unexpected wildlife, an armadillo. The armadillo did not seem to mind us being right next to it while foraging for food. It even made funny noises while walking about.
The ocean side beaches are beautiful and clean. The soft sand feels wonderful under your feet. Very peaceful location. There are no shower houses or feet wash stations. The bathrooms are compost toilets with no running water. Plenty of parking for each beach location, 5 total. Beware, location 5 is a nude beach. No one was nude during our visit. .
The park offers many other opportunities as well: back-country camping, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, surfing, swimming, boating and birdwatching. Everything you need to know about the park system is available on the Canaveral National Seashore website.
