This is such an easy and iconic hike right here in the city. There are options for longer or shorter hikes. I generally do the more direct 2ish miles up and back. There are just a couple spots with somewhat steep climbs. Anyone in moderately good shape can do this. The views are worth the work!
Great, short(ish) hike that is fairly populated. Folks should know that: 1) a lot of locals and their off-lead dogs hike here (and are super friendly); 2) we did the ascent in 30 minutes and it's a good short heart ❤️ pumper in portions; and 3) if it's been raining, the Old Pen track can be super silty/slick/steep in parts; if it's been dry, it's super dusty/slide-y. Because of the latter, we chose to head right ("Old Pen Trail") at the start of the hike to take the steep parts on the ascent, and take the upper trail (Table Rock #15) on the descent (more rocks, less slippery). We did this as a brief hike before a long car ride home, but next time we'll explore the off-shoots (quarry trail, tram trail, etc) and make it longer. Views of Boise and mountain ranges in distance were fantastic.
Great hike is you have a couple hours to kill. Steep parts but lots of room to stop and rest.
Love this hike. Trail is well traveled. Others hiking the trail are friendly.

FYI. This is not an easy hike. I'ts beautiful but in no means an easy beginner hiking trail. If you are not in good shape or have a current lower body injury, please re-think hiking to the top. Views are amazing. Be prepared for very unpredictable strong winds and blowing dirt. Trail is very bumpy and ruff.
This was my 1st Idaho hike.
(I would rate myself) scale 1-10 Im a solid 5 :)
I'm not trying to be negative about my review, just a heads up for beginners and people who are not in very good shape or have a injury.
I am 51 and in average shape. It took me 1 hr to climb to the top. Well worth every step.
I welcome comments. Positive or negative:)
Enjoy-Happy hiking
