Oh, I how I wish I lived in the Chicago area so that I could utilize the services of this amazing counseling group regularly!
I have been in touch with Billy Kaplan for about two years regarding my children who come from "hard places" (they experienced early-childhood trauma before they came to live with us). He's always been helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. I have also watched the DVD he made with Christine Moers several times, and have purchased copies to give to those interested in the struggles my children face.
Billy Kaplan organizes and runs an annual conference for parents who have kids with trauma issues. We were able to attend this year, thanks in no small part to the scholarship offered to parents who struggle financially, and it was a great weekend that provided us with a lot of tools to help our children progress toward more functioning territory.
The other staff members from House Calls were amazing as well, from the assistants to the other therapists and LCSWs. Thank you, everyone, for a fantastic conference experience, and we hope to return next year!
I have worked with and received support from House Calls Counseling and Parenting in SPACE since 2011. The reason I chose to partner with them and have referred so many people to their services is because they are parent-focused. Parenting in SPACE was the first conference I knew of or had attended that truly did focus on those of us in the caregiving role. Usually you find yourself as a part of one track at a conference. Not there. You were the whole show.
Billy Kaplan says often that parents and caregivers are the "magic pill" for our kids and their healing. House Calls doesn't just throw that out there and leave you to figure it out. From the very beginning, they meet parents where they are. They train you in therapeutic parenting techniques. They help you break down your own triggers and histories so that you can be more effective for your child. HCC supports you and builds you up first. I have found it to be very true that the greatest healing happens at home, and it starts with us - the adults. The staff at House Calls believes that too; they believe you have it in you, even when you are struggling to believe it yourself.
