We have two pieces from The Potter’s Wife and they are beautiful! I bought them in Three Oaks MI at the Artisan’s Market at Journeyman Distillery. I’m hoping to visit the store in New Carlisle soon.
Wonderful place with beautiful handmade pottery. Louise appeared quite happy to answer questions and discuss the creative process. I didn't want to leave. I will be returning.
Some art shops are intimidating. You feel like the proprietor is assessing whether you really "know" art or are just hunting for something to match the rug. Sometimes you are afraid to even open the door. This does NOT describe the The Potter's Wife!! The beautiful gallery is warm, comfortable, filled with touchable, usable art pottery, created by wonderful, real people! The potter (also a painter) and his wife (also a potter and photographer) are fun and interesting to chat with, and are always happy to meet you and tell you about the shop, the pottery, and their town. Go there; you'll enjoy it. And I bet you'll buy something. The pottery is absolutely beautiful, usable ART! (And if you want it to, it will match the rug.)
Is it unusual to find fine contemporary stoneware and porcelain pottery in a small rural community like New Carlisle? Nevertheless, artist/potter Steven Skinner and his BlackTree Studio Pottery settled in this area in 2006, and in 2012, opened The Potter's Wife shop/gallery to exclusively sell BlackTree Studio Pottery's work. The shop is warm and welcoming and visitors are encouraged to browse and ask questions. The striking quality of the shop is the variety of sculpted and hand thrown pieces, which are both artful yet functional. The shop features Steven's "CRUCIBLE" a hearty stoneware and porcelain bowl which among many uses can be used to bake bread. Every 6 weeks or so new designs show up in the shop when Steven completes a new firing. Steven was officially named an Indiana Artisan in 2008.
