This place is wonderful! It is warm and hospitable and people here truly care for you and what you are going through! I wouldn’t trade in what I found here for anything else in the world!
Growing up I identified firstly as a proud Lawrencian and secondly as a religious skeptic. Living in Lawrence, it didn't take me long to see that the town was a cultural epicenter because of the University's draw, and with that, a diverse collection of backgrounds and viewpoints. Through all this, and the many subcultures that comes with Lawrence, it's really easy to get lost in the fray. Free State Church played a pivotal role in my life not just because of how genuine the people are, or how active of a community they have for people of all ages, but because this was the first experience I'd had with a church that didn't have an agenda they wanted to force on me. With that comes honesty, love, and acceptance from people hat held themselves to the same standard that they hold others. I feel like it's human nature to seek acceptance, it's how God made us, it's up to us to accept the opportunities that God gives us to find that; thanks Free State Church.
This is the first place I ever truly felt at home and experienced what family really is.
I grew up "believing" in God, but never really knew what that meant other than Jesus apparently died for me. 7 years ago I was invited out to a church event by a campus student. She got together with me to look at scripture and help me grow *my* relationship with God through understanding the *Bible* - not her opinions. What I valued most about that was the fact that I couldn't, and still cannot, argue against what scripture says. I was presented with the information but it was up to me to decide how I want to live my life or if I see things that need to change. She, among countless others, have helped me continue to grow my heart toward God. The deep and honest connections I have here have challenged me to be better than even my own expectations - not better for people, but better for God. As a naturally insecure, quiet, introverted person by nature, I've fiercely challenged *myself*, through the use of scripture and action, to become outwardly focused and secure in who God has made me. This church has provided me a safe space to feel genuine love and support, and a family that isn't afraid to ask the hard questions and encourage me along the way.
At the end of the day, we are still humans and not God himself. People will always fall short of perfection - even scripture says so. But that doesn't mean we should stop striving for it. This church family has helped me believe in myself and see that God's perfection is worth pursuing.
This church is responsible for my salvation. They are committed to the Word and exploring all the ways we can enhance our relationship with God. The entire congregation is friendly and welcoming, and made me, who has never felt like I fit in anywhere, feel like I had come home.
I've been attending Free State Church for almost a year and a half, and in that time the church has gone through a number of (IMO) extremely positive changes (going from really good to great!). There is an energy and a focus on our Lord, and an overwhelming desire to improve our community.
I can't speak for the negative reviews that have been posted here, but I have never felt anything but love, inclusion, and welcome. Praise Jesus!
This is a great church to help anyone on there journey to find and build a relationship with God. I was raised in a non denominational church my whole life and have had countless experiences with all different church’s. During my upbringing I noticed that so many churches were full of hypocrites that claim to love God but don’t put Gods word into action in day to day life. This really pushed me away from churchs in general. There are many church’s out there that do follow Gods word and do live the word out in there lives and this is one of them. I am so happy that I was introduced to this group of believers and would recommend this congregation to anyone interested in the Bible.
