I have taught at CS#1 in the past and have since moved on to teach higher ed. As someone who has been a part of the long legacy of this school and someone that continues to believes in the mission of CS#1, I cannot say enough great things about this school. I've been in the classroom and experienced first hand how much the instructors care about the children as though they are their own. Academics and play go hand in hand at this school, and they genuinely foster a love and curiosity for learning.
As someone who is seeking the right education for their own child, I read a lot of school reviews and feel compelled to note that not every school is going to be a good fit for your child. No child is the same, and no program an absolute perfect fit, but I can confirm that this school does the best at reaching your child's needs academically, while simultaneously and gently challenging to push themselves further. Students learn autonomy and accountability unlike any program I have ever seen. They are encouraged to talk about real world problems in the classroom and to formulate and voice their own opinion.
I highly recommend this school for your child who wants to learn, play, and be encouraged to be curious about the world around them, not just as a child, but long into adulthood.
UPDATE: We now have 2 kiddos at this school and are more impressed in it than ever! They are excelling academically, but more importantly we feel like the school is a partner in raising conscientious, kind, responsible, cultured, and fun children. Big fans!
ORIGINAL POST: We have absolutely love this school! It's focus on experiential learning and the arts is a perfect fit for our daughter, who has attended for one year. It is an unbelievable learning environment for kids, due to its one-room schoolhouse format, amazing field trips, and top-notch teaching staff. It is helping to build the personality traits in our child that we believe will take her far - accountability, confidence, and a sense of community. And it didn't have a waiting list and is reasonably priced for a private, non-profit education! It has been a blessing for us and so many others in it's 40 plus year history. Thanks, CS#1!
CS1 has surpassed our expectations! We love the arts-infused curriculum. The teachers are dedicated, passionate and caring individuals who are committed to educating the whole child. The students are taught to take responsibility for themselves, each other and the community. The numerous field trips are opportunities for hands-on learning. The students are encouraged to nurture and express their creativity. The one-room school house environment allows students to learn from each other as well as develop leadership skills. We feel so fortunate to have found this gem of a school. If you are looking for a kind and compassionate educational environment with high academic standards, this is the elementary school for you.
I never before saw a school like CS#1, where young children learn responsibility for their own education and emotional intelligence as members of a community. Tons of field trips (> 1/wk!) and an arts-rich curriculum did not come at the cost of core subjects. Looking back now that my son is in high school, I could never have imagined a more successful elementary experience for the development of the whole child. CS#1 provided my son with crucial life skills that helped him succeed at schools both at home and in foreign countries.
Our son attended CS#1 for six years. We cherished our time there and watched our son grow and thrive. He learned to present with confidence, advocate for himself, manage his school work, develop a love of reading and be a leader. This is over and above the strong academic environment which set him up for success. Now as he is in his first weeks of middle school, he is managing the transition with confidence. As we were filing away his beloved treasures from elementary years, we looked through the monthly calendars we saved as a record of all the wonderful field trips and adventures; Alvin Ailey, Kansas City Ballet, Symphony, Coterie, Paul Mesner Puppets, Nelson Art Museum, ongoing work at an organic farm, Steamboat Arabia, Wornall House, Liberty Memorial / WW 1 Museum, Negro League Museum, Weston Red Barn, Reading Reptile Lit Fest, bi-weekly trips to the Plaza Library, CS#1 Annual Play, pancake breakfasts and more. CS#1 is an incredible experience for children and their families.
