My boys went to Wambua's Martial Arts clear through 3rd degree black belts, ten to twelve years. I credit Master Wambua for playing a huge part and having a great influence in how my boys have turned out! Great students, wonderful role models and receiving scholarships for college, I could not ask for better.
They went twice a week for class as well as twice a week for tournament team when they were on it. I highly recommend. I can truly say they earned their belts and know the discipline, respect and responsibility of those belts. Fred has a sincere interest in your child and not just in cashing your check and handing out pretty belts. He is like part of our family. I would not go anywhere else!
When my son was 11 we decided to get him into karate due to the anger issues he was developing (including being violent with us). We were hoping it would teach him respect and discipline - more than what we could do at home. I had seen many kids go through belts at various karate clubs and knew that those instructors were in it for the money and not to really train a child in the true art of karate or Tae Kwon Do. We chose Fred Wambua because he was highly recommended. Mr. Wambua is amazing - he truly cares about these kids and would never promote one to a higher belt just to make some extra cash. He WILL promote them when they're ready and not before. I've seen a few kids stay a belt level for a year or more because they didn't put the effort and learn the way they should. After a few months, my oldest daughter, 13 at the time, started karate with Mr. Wambua. A year after that, my youngest daughter started (6 or 7 years old). All three of my children are now black belts. My son is now 18 and he learned the respect and discipline that were were hoping for. He stopped being physical with us and has learned how to manage his anger. I'm not saying that was all from karate - but it was a huge help in the process. My oldest daughter is now 20 and was able to teach at Wambua's studio before she graduated and went onto college. My youngest child, now 14, has actually gotten her 2nd degree black belt with Mr. Wambua & is continuing in his class today. I cannot recommend Fred Wambua enough - he is a wonderful trainer & a great person. He loves these kids and will push them to go further than they ever thought they could go. If you're wanting your child to fly through karate and be a blackbelt within a year or two then go somewhere else because it won't happen at Wambua's - he makes sure they are learning all the right techniques in forms, sparring, self defense and more. It is a COMMITMENT - NOT a 6 week parks and rec program. It is years of work and endurance - and it pays off. For your child AND for you as a parent. He also trains adults - it's not just for children!
I searched in vain for AUTHENTIC martial arts instruction in Johnson County, visiting karate school after karate school. But I was only finding “McDojo's” who are just handing out belts like candy, with 7 year old “Black Belt” students who in real life couldn't defend themselves against anything stronger than a light breeze on a summer day. I also found a number of schools more interested in locking you into a binding, over-priced, long term contract. These aren't karate schools, they are more like used car dealers with their high-pressure sales tactics. Disgusting.
So I was very excited to finally come across Wambua's, where the philosophy is about real learning, real self defense, and actually EARNING your black belt by learning and demonstrating skills that could actually save your life some day. I was able to interact with the head instructor, Mr. Wambua, as well as get to know some of the students who ranged from white to yellow belt. Unlike some karate schools I visited, I could actually tell the difference between a white belt and black belt not just by the color of their belt, but by their skills, the power in their movement, their attitude, and their confidence.
I HIGHLY recommend Wambua's Martial Arts in Olathe or Spring Hill. Drive past all of those other schools who are really just gimmicks, and get a real karate education at Wambua's.
