This school is a little gem! With a small class and gifted teachers our son has really been able to do well this year. Ms. Mary is a particularly gifted teacher and has gotten my son to actually comment that math is fun!

The tuition is very reasonable as well which makes sending our son there an easier decision.

Ms. Mary (Winterbottom) was my daughter's school teacher from the 4th through her graduation in the 6th grade. Mary came to Christian Family Montessori School, (CFMS) in 2010 , with some very positive reviews from her previous teaching experiences, and so the parents and children alike had very high expectations. I am happy to say that Mary exceeded all of them, and we have flourishing 9th grader in a Montgomery County School magnet program to prove it. Not only did Mary follow in the footsteps of a long time respected upper elementary school teacher, she adjusted to a new school and then after the first year, moved to a new location with the school, and expertly adjusted to the new space as well. All the while, my daughter and her classmates, kids I had known for 6 years or so in our small school, continued to blossom under Mary's energetic teaching style. Mary's love for her work shined brightly through the education she provided to our kids. Your kids will love her too!

My son is going to this amazing school! We had the luck of finding The Journey School at it's inception and I am so pleased with the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of the teachers. They focus on where your child is at and even though it is a 6th - 8th grade school, they have the ability to meet each child where they are at, whether they are above or below level. Having had Montessori training means they can back up and fill in gaps or teach high school level lessons.
They focus not just on academics - they are also helping the children to invest in their community by partnering with Sandy Springs Museum to work on community and volunteer projects. They are always connecting with local families through their work with beekeeping, building projects, chicken coop activities, composting and creating an edible school garden. They started this year with a 3-day camping trip and have continued to explore through field trips, the latest to Jamestown, VA. My personal favorite is the philosophy class they hold where they are really asked to ponder bigger, more meaningful questions. My son's favorite part of the week is the community meal which he helps cook.
This is a small, personal and growing school. If you have a creative, joyful child who wants to be in nature and that you want exposed to the full spectrum of what schooling has to offer, I highly recommend you checking out this school!

The way middle school should be for adolescence! I love how hands-on, outdoorsy, and purposeful this school is for grades 6-8. And don't let the price fool you - The Journey School costs half as much as most of the "good" area independent/private schools, but it delivers 150+% over what they do. Seriously, what a great buy for 6th-8th graders - rigor, experiential learning, community partnerships, and awesome teachers. It's a hidden gem of the way education should be.

I've been involved with the school on a volunteer basis since it started and I have to say how impressed I am with the creative and innovative curriculum and strong community that is developing. I really like how each student progresses at their own appropriate pace, accelerating or reviewing as needed with great support from the staff. The students are getting strong hands-on learning with real life problem-solving opportunities that challenge them to think and drive their concerns and interests forward in a concrete way. From solving the issue of how to stop the water in the chicken coop from freezing, to taking care of their beehives and learning about the microeconomics of selling honey, to learning with scientists at the Smithsonian, to traveling to Jamestown to explore firsthand the history of our country -- it's truly been a joy to watch and be part of. I think the middle school years can be a challenge in many ways, and I like that there is an alternative approach to education that is available. I encourage you to visit the school and see for yourself.
