It's like a historic secret! Amazing to just hang out for a few hours, nice views of Mount Vernon????
Nice park with a fair amount of trails. Very involved staff and cool old buildings to walk in and observe. Lots of animals there for kids to look at.
The National Colonial Farm at Piscataway Park is the cutest little place. My daughter and I went this weekend, where they were hosting two events, one for dogs on Saturday and candle dipping on Sunday. There are wonderful views of the Potomac and Mount Vernon. You can go fishing from the dock or even launch a kayak. The visitor center provides excellent information before you get started. The staff is extremely kind and helpful. Prices are great and they have a good amount of cool things. The animals at the farm heritage animals and are extremely well taken care of. There are pigs, sheep, cows, and chickens. On the weekends, the staff wear traditional colonial dress and can answer all sorts of historical questions. We have been getting a lot of rain recently so the trails were a bit soggy but not too bad. It was fairly stroller friendly if you have a good stroller but bonus if your kids can walk. I had my uppababy and it did just fine but I don't think an umbrella stroller would have done well. It isn't too much walking around the farm to see all the animals, the garden, and buildings. There are many trails around the farm for hiking and dogs are allowed. We will definitly be visiting again in the future!
National Colonial Farm is wonderful! What a great place to explore nature and learn how people lived in colonial times. I especially enjoy being part of the Stitch n' Time club, which allows fiber artists to make hand crafted goods from wool from the farm's heritage breed sheep. The staff is friendly, helpful, and accommodating - everyone from the gift shop cashier to the director. There are really good activities for kids and families and every weekend they have different events. My husband enjoys hiking there and using the farm as an access point for kayaking on the Potomac. Possibly the best thing about National Colonial Farm is that it is one of the best kept secrets in Southern Maryland. It's large, so even when there's plenty of people present, the atmosphere is still quiet and peaceful. Trust a local - avoid the hoards at Mt. Vernon and come to National Colonial Farm instead.
Extraordinary and little - visited national park that is also a working farm, managed in a historically accurate manner. The park is part of the complex of properties on the east side of the Potomac that protects the viewshed from Mount Vernon. Step out onto the docks for a spectacular shot of one of America's great homes. And don't forget to walk all around the property so that you can get an up-close look at the heritage breed animals being raised here. You'll especially enjoy the chickens, which will let you get within touching distance of them as they scratch in the dirt.
