I love this school! Both of my children have attended here and it's been wonderful for their development into responsible, happy, caring, thoughtful, well-spoken, indepedent and hard-working young men. I couldn't be more satisfied.
We moved from Long Beach, CA, all the way to Maryland to attend this special school. We were afraid public schools were all moving in the direction of teaching to "the test" and heard horror stories of large classroom sizes, unhappy teachers (my mother, both aunts, and many friends are/were teachers), and bizarre incentives to cheat. We searched for private schools, and most of them were even more driven, competitive, and unabashedly pushing children to "succeed." We felt that all children were born curious, inventive, natural learners, and that many school models were ruining those innate abilities with constant drilling, testing, and grading children against each other. We opted out!
Our five year old son attends Fairhaven, where he can run outside in the forest, play tag with kids from 5-19 year olds, learn about anything he wants whenever he wants without being labeled. If it takes him two years to learn how to read because he's busy with wood working projects, or simply because it takes him that long, he's free to explore his strengths and decide when to tackle ideas and concepts that may stretch him. He has a vote on everything that happens in the school through their democratic process - and has already voted once to suspend himself for play fighting that got too rough with another young student!! Can your kid take responsibility for himself like that?? We are thrilled with this model and have enjoyed getting to know the other students and their parents - each one fascinating and diverse.
As one parent of a graduate told me (herself a teacher in the public schools) "I work in a 'box' school. A 'BIG box' school. That works for some people. Maybe most people. But not everyone. My daughter didn't fit in at the 'box' schools. She fit right in at Fairhaven!"
My husband and I are both highly educated - two law degrees and one PhD between us. We've opted out of the traditional school models for our child because we believe all children are already intelligent - they don't need schools to make them smart.
