Gorgeous area, especially during the Fall color change. The main path up from the parking area has a lot of large "ankle twister" rocks so be careful!
Very nice e woods, transitioning from an oak forest to maple forest. Trails are good, moderate difficulty.
Very nice moderate hike (some uphill and more of a rough path). Simple loop trail with halfway shortcut. Can still hear the cars nearby though. Houses bordering the back sort of disruptive but could be helpful if there’s an emergency on the trail. Did not see any wildlife besides spiders. Dogs are allowed on trail
Having come here dozens of times for hiking, family outings, and some photography, I really do enjoy the scenery. There is even an about 3' tall waterfall off the main path. Only two cons I notice are that the bridge to the main paths is always covered in an inch of mud, and that the surrounding neighborhood's houses are obviously visible which takes away from the feel of nature. Even so, it is still a good, quiet place to get away from it all.
Edit: the main bridge has been cleaned by an unknown force! Thank you to whoever did this, you are the reason I have any hope for humanity left! Upgrading my rating from 4 to 5 stars, as that was my major issue.
See and hear migrating songbirds in the spring. Enjoy the cool shade of the old-growth forest canopy in summer right in an urban area. Natural History: Although surrounded by the City of Gladstone and the greater Kansas City metro area, Maple Woods is a reminder of the wildlands that once dominated this area just 200 years ago.
