Great church
I love my church and church family. Everyone is welcome at Oakwood.
This is a traditional small-town Southern Baptist church.
Beleif:
The church’s over all belief system and organization matches closely to that of the 2009 Southern Baptist Convention. I am told this is by choice not compulsion since the church is a Sothern Baptist member but remains autonomous.
Leadership:
Pastor Zach Hill is well educated in theology and his sermons are not just inspiring and educational but very provocative. His leadership style is VERY heavy-handed! He ensures things in the church are run exactly the way he wants.
Praise & Worship:
The worship team is lead by the pastor's wife on the piano and as the lead singer. The music is a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary praise songs.
Missions:
The missions and ministries are traditional, with donations to Christian focused children’s organizations and proselytizing missionaries.
Social & Congregation:
The social functions are a regular occurrence (trunk or treat, thanksgiving dinner, lunch at the lake, etc.) and often include a potluck meal.
Most other churches in this area have third and fourth generation families attending so newcomers are not necessary. In those churches it seems there is no need to develop new relationships when you have your whole family right there next to you on the pew. It is different with Oakwood Baptist; One feels not only welcome but part of the family!
It is a homogenous congregation (mostly lower to middle-class and white). That is to be expected since Harrison County itself is predominantly middle-class Caucasian.
Dress Code:
Dress is casual with most of the congregation wearing jeans and button-down or skirt and blouse.
This church is growing and doing great things. I may be slightly biased as I lead worship, but it's a great place that will love you like family!
