Fort Churchill State Historic Park

This a a wonderful historical place to visit! The museum is excellent and told the story of the fort very well. The remains of the buildings have been maintained and the trail around the fort is very informative with many signs. I particularly liked the bakery. Close by is the Carson River with a picnic area and a campground. Bring a picnic when you visit!

We went as a family with the oldest being 68 and the youngest 3-years old. We went on a Saturday. The park was empty except for us. The temperature was 97°! Even though there is very little shade; it wasn't bad at all, heatwise. The history of Fort Churchill is amazing, having been built in the mid-late-ish 1800s. There are still several adobe buildings. They all have an information board in front of each building, telling you what the building was used for. The Carson River runs along the back. We truly enjoyed our time there and will go back.

Excellent experience and nice little museum. Alot of history at this location. Clean restrooms for weary travelers. Very nice picnic location, it's well worth the 3/4 mile side road to access the site.

If you like old west / historic fort type stuff, you'll appreciate this little known park. There are a dozen or so of the original adobe structures to see, but no complete ones and all have been reinforced (except the remains of the bakery) to protect what remains of the underlying adobe. Many of the structures have nice explanatory displays. The structures are spread out so you'll get around a mile of walking in. The fort is situated in a desolate, but pretty valley. The museum was closed when I visited, but it had displays with notes designed for through-window viewing. There are two original cannons on display as well as a few old wagon wheels. The cemetery contains the grave of a rancher and his family, but no Soldiers. I wouldn't invest a lot of effort coming to the park unless you incorporate it with seeing other nearby places. For me, these include Virginia City, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Genoa and old Dayton.
