  I have lost count of how many therapists and psychiatrists who I’ve been through over my lifetime. I have OCD, Depression, Anxiety, and BPD-a volatile mix. When I met Patrick Yates, I had given up on the idea that anyone could help me. Every therapist I had met up to this point, had been woefully disappointing; each visit consisting of “teleprompter-like” questions and comments. The sessions were, needless to say, unsuccessful and left me feeling even more lost- I was the girl who nobody could fix.
  When I met Patrick Yates, I went into that first appointment believing that I would leave feeling like a hopeless case and yet I left with something completely different. Patrick Yates has this innate ability to connect with his patients in a way that makes you feel safe from judgment or defeat. It is a game changer in your treatment because you have someone whose words you can trust. When I found myself in some of the most hopeless times, something about knowing that Patrick Yates is still here for me, made those times more easy to bare.
  His knowledge of the mental illnesses and proper treatments, puts to shame any of the licensed psychologists, or even psychiatrists who I’ve ever met with. After being diagnosed with probably everything in the DSM from the time I was 12 up until now, Patrick’s diagnosis turned out to be the most accurate one. This was confirmed after intensive outpatient therapy where I had several doctors to observe and provide feedback on my condition.
  A decent therapist is someone who can help you solve your problems. A great therapist is a mentor, someone who actually cares whether or not you do in fact solve those problems and refuses to give up on helping you to reach those goals. Patrick Yates has been my therapist for over 6 years and I am forever grateful to him for what he has done for me.

  So there I was....in the middle of my work day as an outside salesperson, in the apartment complex where the abuse first happened so many years ago. I had never been assigned that particular territory and when I was, I was determined to beat the demons back. I would win this time....I would not be haunted. I made it through about 10 days until I just broke down. It was pouring outside, I was in my car, crying uncontrollably and flashing back to that time all those years ago when I was just a kid, and my grandfather touched me inappropriately. The manifestation of that?....anger, addiction, poor self-esteem, failure to thrive, self-loathing, shame. I knew I needed help....and I knew I needed it soon. I thought of ending my life but I have a child...how could I leave that legacy? Still, thoughts of suicide were frequent and intense...
  So I started "googling"....sex-abuse, addiction, Christian Counseling, Morris County and there he was...Patrick Yates, Christian Counselor. But he was a man....how in the world was I going to share all my shameful behaviors with a man? I really had no choice...I just needed help.
  From the first moment of the first time, I knew I was in the right place. Patrick is a gentle, considerate man who easily shows empathy, displays understanding and goes to work immediately in helping to rid the victim's soul of shame. That for me, was huge. It may have taken a few years, but learning to cope with all the shame which led to all the anger which led to broken and failing relationships, which led to more shameful behavior which became a vicious circle of how I lived my life, was a giant step toward wellness and slowly but surely, I started to have glimmers of self-respect followed by hope.
  His perspective or frame of reference in terms of counseling is entirely Biblical without being anywhere near punishing. But....he could always aptly point out that some of my ways of thinking were contrary to how a loving and kind God should be honored and revered and also feared. I am grateful for that knowledge and believe that it may have just saved my life and certainly my sanity.
  It is without reservation that I wholeheartedly recommend Patrick as counselor whether you identify as Christian or not. While Biblical wisdom is profitable to all, it's the manner and practice of a man who is not only a student of the Bible, but a gentle, humble and kind person who is real, transparent, and one of the easiest people I have ever had the pleasure of talking to no matter how difficult the topic. While shame was a huge part of the fabric of my being for a long time, I never once felt ashamed to share with Patrick the many, many stumbling blocks I encountered while on my road to recovery. His patient and loving kindness always put me at ease and I will say again that from the first moment of the first time, I knew I was in the care of a man who most definitely channeled the loving kindness of the Great Counselor Himself.
  P.S. It is important to note how Patrick with patience and encouragement, eased me through relapse after relapse. Patience because he would explain how relapse is another step in recovery and encouragement because that is just who he is....
