A must-visit in Queens for delicious Sri Lankan food! Hearty portions and carefully prepared by the thoughtful staff. Looking forward to stopping by again.
Stopped by on a late afternoon over the weekend. Not that busy and mainly takeout or pickup orders placed. Small counter area with a few bar stools. There’s also about 2 small outdoor tables, not bad since it sits on a quiet dead end by some type of high school. Lamprais seem to be the specialty here, my favorite dish here. Wrapped in banana leaf with a mix of coconut curried cashews, sautéed veg, eggplant and rice. The egg is absolutely the best part - hard boiled egg that’s dipped in egg wash and fried. Devil chicken is also another fave dish I have to get at every Sri Lankan joint, loved the flavor and generous portion of fresh tomato, onion and peppers. I’d personally prefer boneless chicken or less bones to pick through but still bomb flavor. Egg roti made a good side dish although the rice in the lamprais went well with the devil chicken. Also tempted by the shrimp parippu vada, which is a lentil fritter. It was a bit denser like a falafel and not heated up; I’d personally enjoy it at home… then again by the time I ate it, I was stuffed (and very satisfied) from everybody else lol.
We enjoyed a lovely feast and even better service for $35. Staff checked in and made us feel very welcome like we were in someone’s home. Ironically, I just had dinner at Michelin-rated Semma the night before and approximately 4x the price but Queens Lanka is dare I say… just as good or better!!!
Outstanding food! I ordered vegi lamprais and devilled fish.
The lamprais was incredibly aromatic, containing whole cardamom pods, black peppercorns, mustard seeds, cloves, and curry leaves, and included caramelized eggplant, onions, and cashew curry.
The devilled fish consisted of fried kingfish sauteed with vegetables in a sweet and spicy sauce. The fish had a crispy exterior and a meaty, succulent interior. So addictive.
The receipt they provided me for dining in didn't include tax or any option to tip, so offer a cash tip if you can!
Went back to try Vegi Kottu and fish curry over rice: both great as well!
Never had Sri Lankan food before, Very delicious! Had the Rice & Curry Bowl w beef & Lamprais with chicken. Very spicy hot with chiles but not too hot if you’re used to spicy hot. The curry is different flavor from all other curries I’ve had and great! Big platters for $15. Very nice guys. (It’s a lankan grocery store with a small food counter kitchen, a sidewalk table but it’s a takeout really) I recommend!
Never judge a book by its cover. When my husband and I embarked on the 1.5 hour journey to Queens Lanka from our corner of Manhattan, I didn’t have particularly high hopes for what we’d find. I’ve traveled to Sri Lanka many times and have lived in countries neighboring the island for years, so it takes quite a bit to impress me when it comes to Sri Lankan markets. Well, let me tell you that this unassuming store met and exceeded my lofty standards by orders of magnitude. Not only did they have the sambol and rice varieties that you’d expect at any Sri Lankan store, but they also have PANDAN. Fresh pandan…. In the middle of Queens. I’d searched for pandan in NYC for years, and, theretofore, had only found pandan essence. But that wasn’t all, they had all the varieties of fried fish that I used to buy in South India and assumed would never see in the US. And in the very next aisle, they were selling true Ceylon cinnamon. Not the ubiquitous cassia being sold as cinnamon nearly everywhere in the US. I even picked up a clay pot and coconut cooking spoons like the one that we used in India. I had given up hope years ago of ever seeing these products for sale in the US.
As if that weren’t enough, they serve the best Sri Lankan food that I have had anywhere outside of Sri Lanka. That’s right, this tiny convenience store is serving up Sri Lankan food like what you would expect to enjoy at Galle Face beach in Colombo. They don’t tone down any of the spices or bold flavors. This is Sri Lankan food cooked for Sri Lankans, and it makes no apologies about that. The entire store is smaller than my apartment, and yet we stayed there for over an hour shopping and eating. We even ordered fish rolls, fish puffs and fish kottu roti to go so we could have a snack for the long trip back to Manhattan. Hurry up and head over to Queens Lanka before the rest of NYC discovers that this is where the best Sri Lankan food in the city (country?) is.

13 reviews of Queens Lanka "Fantastic little Sri Lankan restaurant tucked away in Queens. Doubles as a grocery store as well that has quite a few necessary items for the community but does a really good bang of job as a restaurant as well. The chef spent the bulk of his career working at one of the five star hotels in Sri Lanka before making the jump to the states and opening up a small store ...
