What a treat Hapag! The aroma from arriving food made the mouth water straight away, and the service top notch. I didn't understand the Filipino names of dishes, but had the luxury of a fluent and well versed lunch companion. She ordered across traditional specials, and i enjoyed tasting each one. My favorite was the fresh lumpia with peanut sauce! Great company. Great service, and delicious food. Hapag hit all the marks.
Can't say enough great things about this place. It's like mom's home cooking plus service with a smile. If my mom was as pleasant as the employees here I might have turned out somewhat normal.
Sizzling sisig, lonsilog, lumpia, pancit, all the hits and more. I could eat here twice a day if I lived closer. Definitely my favorite place in all of WC.
After moving out of NYC, its hard to find great filipino restaurants. Luckily, there’s Hapag. The halo-halo is very good and the pansit was delicious.
We had the Kare Kare and eggplant omelette, both were very delicious ! We would get both again but the oxtail was our favorite. Not sweet even though a peanut sauce which is why I liked it. The waitress was very friendly and helpful in helping us chose a dish . Seems to be authentic since we saw many natives eating there as well. Would highly recommend it .
I've been to plenty of Filipino restaurants in New York over the years, and almost all try and do something funky/fusion-style to the ingredients or preparation to make it more palatable to a sophisticated clientele looking for novelty.
Hapag does none of that, keeping its cooking true to the staple Filipino dishes you'd find at any party or holiday gathering in the Philippines, and is all the better for it. If you're looking for honest-to-goodness, pure Filipino food, Hapag does it extremely well from start to finish, with some clear standouts such as the pork barbecue, pork sisig, tortang talong and halo-halo.
The pork barbecue hits the spot, with the right level of tenderness, meat-to-fat ratio, and smoky flavoring. Have been craving this for awhile and this was as good as anything you can get back in Manila. We liked it so much we got a second order for takeout, to serve at a gathering of other Filipinos the day after.
The tapsilog was fine but still a but overcooked (which I find consistent with all Filipino-American restaurants), but does the job well enough if you have a craving.
Finally, service had the warmth and cheerfulness that captures the best of Filipino hospitality. It's a bit of a trek outside the city but worth it if you're looking for authentic Filipino cuisine done well!
