(March 17, 2023, 5:48 am)Can a surcharge be imposed on debit or prepaid cards? No. The surcharge may only be imposed upon credit cards, and not debit or prepaid cards. The amount of the surcharge may not exceed the amount of the swipe fee paid by the merchant on the particular credit card
I've contacted Josh Stein our attorney general of North Carolina the governor of North Carolina Roy Cooper and the lieutenant governor. This has been well over two months no replies. Businesses and Gaston Lincoln county are charging 4% post tax on debit cards it is illegal. You can refuse to pay just tell the business owner.

That can result in fines, and if the breach of contract continues or is serious enough the merchant risks losing the ability to accept those credit cards. The other restriction is because surcharging on debit card purchases is illegal under federal law. -
