Absolutely wonderful hidden gem. For the price, you can't beat it! The private island has 50 or so sites from vast group sites with amazing views of incoming ships to intimate nooks protected from the wind and shade. The staff, who ferries you across the channel on pontoon boat, and brings your gear to your spot on 4x4 is simply stellar. Friendly, responsive, and adaptive to parties of all size. You can order firewood by the bundle, which they will drop at your site for you. The ferries are nearly constantly running, so it's easy to hop back into town if you need to grab a bite to eat or some additional supplies. The only "negatives" are no running water, about which they are very transparent, and honestly if you are camping you are already used to that, and pit toilets due to said lack of running water. If you like a good hybrid between car camping and backpacking this is for you!

Camped here 3 times. The first 2 were great experiences. The most recent wasn't. Primary issue was the bathrooms. They were not well maintained, the smell was almost intolerable, and there was a lack of paper. Plus, the outside hand washing station didn't have a trash can directly next to it (one was a few feet away), so people just threw their used paper towels on the ground. This is not the camp's fault, but the problem could be easily solved and the place would look better. Second issue was the amount of firewood received right after arrival. We asked for 4 bundles, as we always do, and when it arrived, it looked more like 1 1/2 bundles. We asked about it and the kids (they have kids delivering wood at times) said it's 5 sticks per bundle. My guess is the kids picked the smallest 20 sticks they could find. We told the camp host next time we had to order and that time, they brought the right amount. Small things, but they mean a lot.

If I could give it more stars, I would. We came out here with our 6 kids last year at the start of summer, and are now on our 3rd trip, with the 7th little one, just 5 months old. We LOVE it here! The camp hosts are absolutely incredible and go way above and beyond, and then some to ensure you have the best stay possible. Andrew and his crew have been really awesome, and they have a newer addition to the team, Thomas, who was just as great and really was all about helping make our camping trip top notch. Our huge family, my brothers and sister, and my nieces all LOVE Sand Island Campground. We are so grateful to have found such a gem, and unique experience camping. Huge thanks to the staff for all that you guys do!

Stayed there for the first time and all I can say is I'll be back. The campgrounds are spacious and the camp host are awesome! Make sure to tip them as they do way more work than any other camp host I have seen. They had a sand sculpture contest right before I arrived bit got some good pictures.

The volcano was quiet. There had been no ...

Homeless Camps Are Being Cleared in California. What Happens Next?

OAKLAND, Calif. — John Janosko recently moved into a tiny cabin in Oakland, after the city and the state shut down the sprawling homeless encampment where he had resided for most of the past eight years. City officials consider the shed-size unit — with a bed, a folding chair, a desk and a mini fridge — a vast improvement over the makeshift shelters that once sat beneath a freeway. That ...

What to do if you encounter a bear on your next hike or camping trip

Stay calm. "If the animal sees you, you're going to want to make yourself known in an assertive way," Bigney said.
