The care I received from Coyote Midwifery was exceptional. Joni and Caitlin were part of the team for the birth center birth of my first daughter; in fact, my first prenatal appointment was also Caitlin’s first prenatal check-up as a student midwife. When I learned that they had started their own practice shortly after I found out I was pregnant with our second child, my partner and I were delighted.
Prenatal appointments were all an hour long, so we had plenty of time to not only make sure everything was going well with me and baby, but also to answer all my questions and build a relationship of friendship and trust. This trust was so important when we encountered an emergency situation during my home birth. My daughter had shoulder dystocia (a condition which cannot be predicted beforehand, whether in hospital or at home) and was completely stuck when I was trying to push her out. Joni was able to tell that something was wrong based on the sounds I was making and the knowledge of baby’s position over the past several weeks, and acted rapidly to get her unstuck. Our long appointments had allowed me to get to know her usual joyful voice and personality, so when she calmly but firmly told me I needed to change positions, I did so immediately without asking questions. I could tell something was wrong and remember being terrified, but I trusted Joni so thoroughly that I knew if I just followed her instructions she and Caitlin would do everything they needed to do to help us. My daughter was only stuck for a few minutes. In that short time the midwives had me try a few different maneuvers to dislodge her shoulder, and Joni was able to move her shoulder so she could come out. They knew exactly what to do in the emergency situation. As a critical care RN myself, I know how important it is to act swiftly, reassess, and change the plan when one intervention doesn’t work. Because of my midwives’ knowledge, experience, and calmness under pressure, my daughter and I had very minimal effects from a potentially lethal situation (a slightly tight shoulder for her and a mere 1st degree tear for me).
Overall, this group of women is an absolute joy to work with. Joni, Caitlin, and Noelle are all warm, loving individuals who can both fill a room with laughter and expertly handle an emergency. I felt so supported during both my prenatal and postpartum times and loved that I could text or call whenever I had questions or concerns. During the birth they stayed quietly close by and let my partner support me, checking on me and baby unobtrusively, and only taking over when we needed help. If we decide to have a third child we will definitely choose to work with them again!

Having spent my entire life dreading gynecologist appointments, and avoiding them like the plague, I found myself struggling with infertility. After getting pregnant through IVF at a NYC fertility clinic, I moved to Portland and got serious about finding a midwife. I wanted a caring, relationship based experience that did not make me feel (as the fertiltiy center had) like a number, and equally important, I wanted a midwife who prioritized evidence based medical care. I hit the jackpot when I met Joni Petersen.

In complete opposition to the OBGYN model of care, I found myself laughing, crying, and being sincerely listened to. This was a different kind of medical appointment- I found myself looking FORWARD to our meetings. No concern or question was too small- everything was considered. My wife’s concerns were just as important, and we never felt rushed or dismissed.

My first son was born with Joni’s assistance at a local birth center and was the most empowering experience of my life. What a triump! While it was surely the most difficult thing I’ve ever accomplished, I felt safe, and in fact eager to do it again when I was finished. So I did! Three years later I followed Joni and her partner Caitlin to their new practice, Coyote Midwifery, when I got pregnant again.

What a team- this time we planned a home birth, and my second son came quickly. After ten minutes of pushing I found myself laughing in the bathtub with a baby in my arms.

At every turn, during my pregnancy, birth, and post partum care, there were options; presented evenly and patiently. I was in control of my own body and felt empowered to make educated decisions because of Joni and Caitlin’s incredible knowledge base and tender dispositions. Side note: Because of my age, I had a few tests at a local hospital in concurrence with my midwifery care. Two different perinatologists mentioned that Joni was their favorite, most knowledgable midwife to work with in Portland.

Looking to laugh your way through pregnancy with the most fun, caring, smart birth team in Portland? This is it. I’d follow them to the moon and back.

When you yourself are a midwife, it can be very difficult to choose midwives for your own pregnancies. When I found out I was pregnant with my second baby, there was not a question in my mind as to who I wanted by my side, it was always Joni and Caitlin. They will fill any room with the best laughter. They will provide comprehensive evidence based information to help you make the best choices for you, your baby and your family. They will calmly and compassionately listen to your every worry and discomfort along the way and I know they can confidently and safely handle any complications that may arise because I have seen them do it many times. They were amazing with my partner and older child and always found ways to incorporate them both into our care along the way. I love them both so much more than I could ever put into words and am eternally and so deeply grateful for the care they provided myself and my family throughout my pregnancy, birth and postpartum. They have my highest recommendations.
