Decent school. Went for CDL A and took the 4 week course since I already had a grasp on much of what's involved and figured out how to swing the cost since you can only get a student loan/grant with the 6 month course. The school itself wasn't too bad. Odd interiors, like it was a warehouse and converted with parts still open to the outside. I'd imagine it'll be very cold in winter in those parts until you get into the classrooms that are climate controlled.

The trucks are in rough shape, that is certainly true. Many are older 90s trucks that aren't fit for road service. Same with the trailers, some of which have no brakes, which can simulate being loaded, inadvertently of course, when doing maneuvers in the lots. Obviously those aren't ever taken out though. They have the common sense to only use the road certified equipment and they had just loaded one of them with sand when I finished. But still, it's all good to learn off of. Looking at it and seeing what wouldn't pass inspection, it was a good learning experience to use this equipment and even put in practice since we were the ones to check it all out before using it for the day.

And that was all in addition to the usual checking the fluids and inspecting for bad parts and flat tires. It brings a sense of reality. Sure, most trucking companies keep newer fleets, but even they will break down and it's good to know what failed and how. Knowing that, you can either fix it or tell the mechanic that comes out so the work can go faster.

School staff are pretty good. The ones that worked in admissions were all great as well as most of the CDL instructors. All seasoned veterans of the industry and each offering guidance and tips on certain things that when all combined can give you the skills to pass the tests. You get sent on so many practice road tests you basically ride with each instructor at least once so you get a lot of input on how you are doing from various people that had their own different experiences in the industry.

And therein lies the rub though. The planning of the road testing times tends to be a little off. When we go out on the road tests some of the class stay to work on maneuvers. When we switch, much of the time the maneuvers will change as well. This is a problem since it can leave students who never get to practice a specific one until near the end of the course. This also means one of the 6 month instructors uses that to have contests of the skill in question, us, who've only had a total of 3 tries ever at that point in time, against his students, who've had a longer time to practice and know this from talking to them. Basically him and the students themselves use it to tear us down and build their own egos. So basically, don't ever give in and play that game is what I am saying. Just do you, work on your maneuvers, and all will go well. You can actually choose two out of the main 3 types to do on the state test anyway so even if you do poor at one, as long as you can do the others fairly well you can pass that portion of the test, no problem.
