The Great River Taoist Center (GRTC) is an excellent place to advance one's martial training. Laoshi Rodell exemplifies the mix of martial artist and scholar, both transmitting well-refined and well practiced techniques (both locally and in seminars around the world) as well as providing insight/translations to historical texts. Also, he teaches with humility but also exacting standards, and the fellow students have a great camaraderie. It is a welcoming place to grow. If you want to learn a well-developed, complete martial system of Taiji and/or develop high level sword skills, then this has to be one of the top places in the world to study.
What I have always enjoyed about Great River is the dedication of the senior students, in they way they push each other and in helping with instructing the newer students.

Test cutting was a forgotten tradition in Chinese swordsmanship that has been revived at Great River Taoist Center. The jianke (swordsman, 劍客 ) cuts different types of targets to test different skills. A small, unsupported piece of bamboo is widely considered one of the most challenging cutting targets.
