  This is an amazing place filled with American history, especially the Civil War era. I love that the information available about the fort area also includes African American history and history of women at the site. I've lived in this area most of my life and never knew what a significant role Ft. Monroe played in our nation's past until I went there are learned from a park official. Be prepared to be sad - a lot of the historical buildings are in decline for lack of funding. :( I've heard that a huge celebration is planned in 2019, with lots of great programs focused on Ft. Monroe's background from many perspectives. The area also includes beaches, including Paradise Ocean Club and a great brewery. Truly a hidden gem for history buffs!
