  Adventuresome almost enchanting walking the hallways of such a rich historical landmark. I'm sure I could spend a few days to more fully take in all that is there, but the casements and the education center was a very enjoyable 2-3 hours. I especially enjoyed seeing and touching the artillery pieces, the 12" smoothbore cannons, the 16" rifled cannons, and the shells that fired from them.

  Before the pandemic, I did just the encasement. The Visitor's Center is new and is very well planned.
  You're encouraged to tour the Visitor's Center, given a sticker with the time of the next group self-tour that includes a scavenger hunt. All was education plus fun family activity.

  City of Hampton Black History month tour. Great exhibits about African American History. The spokes person was very knowledgeable. What a treasure. I will be back.

  The visitor and education center is a perfect place to begin a day exploring Ft. Monroe! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about everything at the fort. If you have a National Parks Passport, you can get it stamped for free. Free seems to be the key word at Ft. Monroe! You can take the entire family there for the day and not spend a dime!
  The exhibits trace the history of the fort from the 1600s through its decommission in the 2000s. They do a fantastic job of tracing African American history from the earliest days of slavery, the “contraband” policy, the lighthouse keepers, to influential educators and politicians of later centuries. Native American artifacts are also on display along with items uncovered during renovations of fort facilities. The gift shop is very nice too. You can pick up tickets for the free tour of the Casement Museum. Be sure to check the website because it’s not open every day of the week!
