I second everything in Jodi Anderson's post. Nice if you are looking to beat the crowds and have soft prarie ground under your feet. Sure some of the trail is a mowed path through the woods, but that part connects the amazing lake/marsh system in the more center of the area. There aren't trails but are paths in which others have slightly worn and can follow if paying attention. Was the only person there for 3 hours!

It is pristine on the trails. Only saw 2 other humans. Saw native cacti which was unusual and found a baby snapping turtle on the trail. Beautiful grasses and huge trees.

This state natural area is largely unknown by those outside of the immediate area, or at least it seems that way and I don't mind. Most of the time when I visit, there's no one else at Mazomanie Oak Barrens. If you bring your dogs, please be aware that there are patches of thorny cacti throughout the area.

On your right, if you are coming into the park, there's a nice dune as well as an area carpeted with various mosses. It's about 100 feet southwest of the parking or circle section of the drive. It's always worth a stop when I visit. From the pines, there's a trail heading southeast that makes for a nice walk through the prairie and into the woods beyond.

Who would have known Wisconsin has their own native cactus plant? So cool! And it's right off the highway. No hiking required!
