Jess is a wonderful counselor whose ability to sign, familiarity with Deaf culture, respect for survivors with multiply marginalized identities, and expertise in trauma-informed equine therapy has greatly benefited clients of Deaf Overcoming Violence through Empowerment (DOVE).

We worked with Jess to host three group equine therapy sessions for Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and Hard of Hearing (DDBDDHH) victims/survivors of abuse in 2017. Our clients responded positively to their experiences in group equine therapy, and the project was so successful that we are working with Jess again this year to host a mini-retreat for survivors as well as a community event. As a hearing service provider, Jess understands the importance of accessible services for DDBDDHH individuals, and also the importance of collaboration and sharing services with organizations that are staffed by DDBDDHH people themselves.

Jess was an amazing mentor for me when I was an intern at the Gender Identity Center. We have so much in common including our passion for social justice and how we integrate it in our clinical work. I learned so much from Jess. They bring a wealth of academic, clinical, and counseling knowledge, and ignite growth in me as a new clinician. Jess is lovely with language and teaching. Jess is also walking the walk! They are active in the D/deaf community, care deeply for Native American rights, and stand on the LGBTIQA front, which is impressive and inspiring!

Jess led a Gender Diversity training workshop for the Contemporary Performance MFA program staff and faculty at Naropa University. Jess did an amazing job in responding to our specific requests (movement and somatic based exercises, specific topics and issues that the department has encountered). We left the training with a much deeper appreciation for intersectional ally-ship, a deeper awareness of the dynamics at play in gender diversity, and more confidence in navigating power-privilege-oppression in an academic setting. Along with a wealth of information and experience, Jess was extremely skilled in responding to our specific departmental and team needs through leading thoughtful discussion, exercises, and resources. I would recommend Jess to anyone considering a training in any area of gender diversity and, in particular, would recommend Jess’s training for a team or group in an academic setting.

We have been working with Jess on many different projects over the last few months and it has been wonderful. We reached out to Jess to help support our work at Turing School of Software and Design. We were looking for more resources to support the mental health and well being of our students. Jess took the time to learn about Turing, asked us questions to understand our goals, and created customized sessions to meet our needs. Jess has been a vital part of creating the community that we want for students. She is extremely professional, patient, and knowledgeable. Her perspective is essential for helping us reach out goals. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Jess.
