Nice trail with lots of shade. Be prepared for the slope though. Get two cars and park each at different entrances. This helps you enjoy the full trail (about two hours).
Extremely limited parking, yet I managed to score a spot at noon on a Tuesday during the holidays. The Redwood loop does not disappoint, beautiful stands of redwoods that are picturesque. Connects with Purisima Creek Trail, a shaded and well groomed trail for hiking and mountain biking. There is a pit toilet at the intersection of the Redwood Loop and Purisima Creek trail. Parking is free but limited to a handful of spaces, even along Skyline. This side of Purisima is much less crowded than the west end.
This lot does exactly what is intended and makes for a pleasant experience if one is lucky enough to arrive in time to park there. The lot has limited capacity, but that is to ensure that the Preserve is not overcrowded; either way, you can park off the side of the highway to the same effect, so no worries if you cannot fit in the lot. Still, the lot offers incredible convenience for entering the preserve and seeing some awesome sights right off-the-bat.
Nicely maintained trails. Lovely redwoods and a small creek on the purisima trail. From this parking lot (no fee) the trail is one large hill down. So make sure to save your energy for the walk uphill the whole way back. There is a pit toilet and picnic table near the start of the trail.
Challenging hike. 2 miles down hill to the creek, which means it's a 2 mile hike back *up hill.* Beautiful scenery, deep in the woods. Make sure you're fit enough for a long up hill hike before you attempt.
