Excellent memorial! It is hard to honor an event that spans years and has people from every state and protectorate, but this memorial did a wonderful job in representing such a pivotal event. It was inspirational and, though not a 'moving' experience, its round design embraces the visitor and the quotes are uplifiting, helping us to understand the significance of this war.
The fountains are beautiful and well situated and there is a great view of the Lincoln Monument in the distance. Turn and you will have an incredible, clear view of the Washington Monument on the Eastern side of this WWII Memorial.
The best part, for me, were the smaller relief sculptures in the walls depicting various types of soldiers, war scenes and life on the home front. Take the time to look at each of these!
It was 11 PM when we decided to walk along the Reflecting Pool from Lincoln Memorial toward WWII Memorial. It was very peaceful, safe and absolutely beautiful. You can sit next to the fountain and put your feet in the water. The Memorial is beautiful and grand! It was really memorable experience. Even that late at night many people were sitting around.
This spot was a God send on a hot day. You are allowed to sit along the edge and dip your toes in the water. The water was crystal clean and was clearly treated and managed regularly. The peaceful fountains and beautiful memorial are a worthy stop-especially on a hot day. I am not sure if the brass stars were a recent addition or if I had somehow issued them previously but the sign explaining their meaning and that part of the memorial were especially amazing and sad.
What amazing experience to see the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and Capitol building! Some many diverse cultures and people! Exactly how this country was founded. The United States Constitution is as valid today as it was 245 years ago! Don't diminish its power to govern.
