Little shops, and small museum.
Amazing to think of the history in this place. Also amazing to think that at one time, at the very spot where you're standing, was once several feet of water in one of the most important transportation ways of the 19th century. Now that's some history!
It's not the Panama canal lock for sure.
Great place to hike
Although there's no longer any water flowing through it, this lock is well preserved and well worth checking out. Once a part of the extensive Chesapeake and Ohio Canal waterway, you can walk along the towpath (and down through the lock itself) and get an idea of what it took to transport goods and material the 185 miles from beginning (Cumberland, MD) to end (Washington, D.C.). Quite a feat of engineering for its day. Well worth reading about and brushing up on its history.
