One of the hidden gems of Harriman State Park. Located on the top of West Mountain with amazing view of Hudson River. In a good weather you can even see Manhattan skyline. The best part - you can see it all right from the shelter. It's like watching a big screen TV.
Unlike most of dilapidated Harriman shelters, West Mountain shelter is in a good condition - clean and well maintained.
It's quite popular and may get crowded, especially on summer weekends.
Water is a bit of a problem - the only spring is way down West Mountain and it dries out on summer.
Probably the best views in Harriman State Park. Shelter is in good shape. Lately (Fall 2018) it has been suffering from a Wasp infestation which might make spending your time in the woods nearby more enticing and just popping in there to check the views. Its also very popular so people are always passing through. This is good and bad. Last week I made a good friend and we shared some stories, this week some folks who were not looking to make friends. Its got 2 fireplaces, probably 5 stars in winter as the wasps and people are less of a problem.
Cool place to chill after the end of an awesome hike. You can camp there too.
Enjoyed a mountain top full of wild blueberries, a fantastic view of NYC skyline and watched a fireworks display 25 miles away while the artillery from West Point were booming. It was amazing.
Dope hike. It's a nice moderate hike and you can easily get lost if you don't pay attention to the signs.
