My go to local hike. A few different ways up. I like to make it short and steep. Good quick workout with awesome views for sunset.

Nice hike to a great view, but it does get crowded.

Anthony's Nose is a 900 foot mountain directly across the Hudson River from Bear Mountain. It offers wonderful views of the Hudson Highlands, Iona Island and marsh, the Hudson River, the Bear Mountain Bridge and also some freight train action on the railraod tracks. There are two ways to get to the viewpoint. You can start on the Appalachian Trail right off Route 9D, just a bit north from the Bear Mountain bridge. Once you start, you will follow the Appalachain trail (white trail markers) until you meet the Camp Smith Trail (blue trail markers), which will be on the RIGHT. Get on the blue trail which will lead you to Anthony's Nose. Stay on the blue trail for the remainder of the hike until you reach the view point. Enjoy the view and simply follow the way BACK to where you started from Route 9D. If you are feeling more adventurous for a much, much longer hike with more viewpoints, you can start on the Camp Smith Trail on the otherside. Get to the Bear Mountain Toll House and start on the Camp Smith Trail (blue). This will take you up Manitou Mountain to Anthony's Nose. There are many great viewpoints along the way. Stay on the blue trail all the way to Anthony's Nose. You will know you have reached the summit when you can see the Bear Mountain Bridge right BELOW. When done, reverse and follow the blue trail BACK to where you started on the parking lot. Also keep in mind that this is a much longer hike. About 5-6 miles. Bring water, lunch, proper hiking gear and a sense of adventure.    *There is another parking lot where you can start further up the road if you do not want to start from the Bear Mountain Toll House. It's a shorter hike to Anthony's Nose and skips Manitou Mountain.

Love this place, I'd gone from the Camp Smith Trail, which goes along side a NY State National Guard grounds, thus the warning sign pictured. Clearly marked though, so long as you're attentive, there's nothing to worry about. Worth it with the multiple views, in comparison to the northern path.
