(March 20, 2023, 1:41 pm)Our visit to Cragfont, Castelian Springs, was part of Spirits of Sumner Historic Haunts Tour, a bus tour to 5 historic locations in Sumner County, TN. Cragfont was our first stop after leaving Rosemont. It is located on Avery Trace, the original road which settlers traveled from the east coast to Knoxville to Nashville, and today is TN ST HWY 25, Castellian Springs, TN. Cragfont was the home of Gen. James Winchester, a hero of the American Revolution. The site was quickly established as a fort and used in westward expansion. It has a colorful history, is located on beautiful land, and has its own ghost stories. It is a must see.

(April 2, 2022, 8:34 pm)Cragfont is truly amazing and and should be on everyone's historic home bucket list. On our tour, we learned construction for the historic home began in 1798 and was completed four years later. The front features seven stars, the decorative part of an amazing house stabilizing system. We found each one hides a huge bolt which connects to a rod spanning the width of the house and presumably can be tightened in the event the house needs it. Inside, there's rooms furnished with heirlooms from General James Winchester's family, amazing to think this expansive collection from his decendants exists. Finally, it was amazing our tour guide was a direct decendant. She offered so many details and stories only a family member would know. The tour includes walking through the beautiful gardens and the family cemetery. It's a wonderful tour and a pleasant way to spend our time. I highly recommend Cragfont for anyone interested in history, architecture and construction or lovely gardens.

(May 15, 2021, 10:41 am)Wonderfully kept mansion from the past with its old Homestead place still there neat the visitors center. Perched on a hill top off highway 25 it is a wonderful respite from today's busy world.
